Debra Sisson Oil Painting Pet Cat Art Animal Portrait

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

A large orange cat with shaded green eyes is enjoying some sun and is one cool cat I think! This is one of several animal paintings of mine which were on loan for a time to our local art center's program, "Art Space in Work Place".  This kitty went to a veterinary clinic which was his new home for a while.  Might have even liked it better too, who knows?  Cats are strange creatures.

Doe Portrait

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Deer Art Wildlife Animals

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6"

One good thing about living where we do (Arkansas river valley) is that deer romp through our rural area right out in the open and don't seem to think much about it.  Our neighbors would agree! The down side is, of course, that they eat tender garden offerings and rub the bark off of young trees. I don't get up early enough (why not?!) to see them in the semi-darkness, but I wanted to paint this doe against a dark background to show off her great features.  So many different tones of red/brown/gray/white and more are apparent in her coloring.  Painting wildlife is comforting to the soul and  a lesson I've known for quite some time I believe.

Winter Female Cardinal

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Bird Portrait Wildlife Audubon

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 6".

A female cardinal was posing on a shepherd's hook while waiting her turn at the feeder and looking sweetly "puffed up".  Male cardinals are spectacularly flashy and I love them, but I also think the females are gorgeous in their own way. This one received her due attention I think.  I'm glad to be distracted by birds in winter!

Blushing Granny

Debra Sisson Watercolor Painting Apple Still Life Fruit

Watercolor on paper, 5" x 5".

While still fooling around with the single green apple and shadow images, this was one of my favorites.  I love its simplicity and interesting character of form, lines and color. Your comments are welcome and I always enjoy talking to you about my art!

Two frosty cocktails anyone? Oil on 5x7 wood panels

These two  frosty cocktails look pretty inviting. They are from pictures posted on facebook by an old neighbor of mine from Bettendorf, Iowa. He now lives in Florida. Every so often he shares pretty drinks poolside. They look so yummy! I asked him if he would mind me painting them? They were a lot of fun to do. Each one in a different glass. The blue and yellow hand blown off centered glass was really fun to do. I used my palette knife to help build the frosty ice in the blue glass. I hope you enjoyed viewing these delightful drinks.
I only wish I was sitting pool side enjoying one of these myself right now!! Cheers!!

Cat Tracks

Debra Sisson Watercolor Painting Pet Portrait Tabby Feline Art Snow

Watercolor on watercolor canvasboard, 5" x 7".

A bulky Tabby cat with lovely markings was making her way across my front yard after our last 6 inches of snow had fallen.  I captured her with my camera and then again in watercolor.  I used watercolor canvas and the painting is sealed with acrylic spray and will not be required to be framed under glass.  The long shadow she made in the afternoon on the brilliant snow was why I grabbed my camera, and the clear footprints were what I noticed later that made me decide to paint her.

Blushing Green Apple

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Still Life Apples Fruit Art

Oil on canvas, 5" x 5" x 1.5".

This time I painted a single green apple on a square canvas which felt like a good fit to me. The interesting parts were defining the roundness of the apple and working with the complimentary colors of the apple and background.  Edges were important too.  I'm becoming more aware of working with edges that are lost to the background and others that are clearly defined.

Mourning Light

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Bird Portrait Dove Wildlife

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 8".

A mourning dove was stretching and sunbathing on a deckrail, and thanks to my photographer friend, Jeanette Foreman, I was priviledged to create a painting from her photo.  This is my vision of what I saw in the lovely image and I'll be anxious to see what Jeanette's vision turns out to be in the watercolor (or oil?) she has planned.  The dove's head is very attractive against the bright colors, but I was also intrigued by the subtle blue/grey feathers underneath the wing.

A day at the Peel Mansion

Every spring we have a 3 day plein air paintout at the Peel Mansion in Bentonville Ar. Usually about 40 artists participate. It is a really fun event for all artists. The flowers and the mansion are lovely. This painting was done on location and then brought back to the studio for some finishing touches. Enjoy a hint of spring.

Roses to chase away the winter blahs

We have had a lot of snow in Northwest Arkansas -This painting of roses helps us to remember that spring is just around the corner . I like to paint wet into wet utilizing glazes -I feel that loose brushwork gives a more painterly look to the painting. This is what I strive for. Please look in old posts for my previous paintings Thanks for visiting my website at annpowersart.com.

Simple Fruit

Debra Sisson Watercolor Painting Still Life Pear Grape Fruit Art

Watercolor on paper, 5" x 5".

The snow outside makes my studio much brighter and I like to make watercolor studies of  fruit on these cold winter days, especially when the sun makes an appearance.  The long cast shadows of the grape and pear are equally important elements of the painting.  Reflected colors mixed in also add to the painting adventure.  It's always nice to have watercolors to go back to after I've had several oil-painitng challenges and headaches!

Whitney Ballerina painting by Leslie Newman

Whitney Ballerina
Acrylic on canvas 9x12

This is a painting I did representing my neice, Whitney Hansen. Whitney
is the only daughter of my Brother Todd, and his wife Kathleen.
She is a very accomplished dancer and has been since she
was a young girl. Whitney now is a freshman at U of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

I was able to capture her in what she would wear for a formal
performance. For years she took part in the Nutcracker dancing
as different characters. She also did different recital, dance and drama parts
for her school and the dance troop in Grand Rapids, MI.

Dancing gave Whitney life long friendships and memories she can keep with her the
rest of her life. I painted this as a surprise for her 16th Birthday. I
appologize the photo of this is a bit unclear.

Bulldog Puppy

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Pet Portrait Art English Dog Canine

Oil on hardboard, 2.5" x 3.5"

I love English Bulldogs and this an earlier miniature painting that I did of one of these guys sleeping.  He has gorgeous markings and deep wrinkles. I always stop to photograph one when I get the chance because I think their bodies and facial expressions are irresistible.  They're so cute when they're sleeping!

Little Green Ones

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Still Life Apples Fruit Art

Oil on hardboard, 5" x 7".

Another green apple painting.  I did one last year that I was happy with using just one apple.  I went back to my original idea and used three this time.  I love the colors and their contrasts with each other.  Also, I'm always amazed at how just the shapes of the apples (or other fruit) and their stems can make an interesting painting.
