Trail-Happy Yellow Lab

Oil Painting Labrador Retriever Dog Art Pet Portrait Woods

Oil on hardboard, 10" x 8"

I was happy that this painting of a Lab was juried into the Art Show at the Dog Show this spring at Wichita, Kansas (www.artshowatthedogshow.com).  A great thing about Labs is that they are always ready for a hike and especially when it involves rough, hilly terrain in a woodsy environment.  This angle of a yellow Lab captures the reflected coloring on her face, neck and chest from the forest plants and sky. That was the hook for me and her intense concentration on something in the distance was also appealing.  I was keeping the paint heavier and striving for a looser feeling in the piece.

Sunny Side Duck

Oil Painting Farm Animal Palette Knife Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

I have several potential paintings from photos I took at the Wilderness Drive-Through (and walk-thru) Safari in Gentry, Arkansas which has many exotic animals.  I chose this non-exotic duck as the first painting because of the great sunlight effects on the white duck who was so friendly to me and my camera.  She radiated with great reflected colors all around her.  I toured the zoo with some artist friends a couple of weeks ago and we definitely were inspired to paint the animals from our experience in this amazing place!

"Bella" 6x6 oil on canvas by Leslie Newman

"Bella"

This is Bella. She is a light silver schnauzer. This is a oil painting I did of her as a puppy, as she is now about 2 yrs old.  Bella belongs to some friends that live in West Des Moines, IA. Her human Mom posted this puppy pic on facebook and I told her I had to paint it. It was not real easy to paint, given the light values of Bella all over. I used these variety of colors mixed with the white to give her some depth:.Shiva ice blue, Gamblin radiant violet,Permalba titanium white, Maimeri burnt sienna, and Gamblin torrit grey. I used a mix of Utrecht alizarin, and cad red for the background..

Although Bella had her curly puppy coat in this painting, she now is in adult coat, all trimmed and shaved. She would be fun to paint now as an adult. I may contact her owner and ask for a current pic and then do a comparison painting. Her owner tells me she is a character that can easily get into trouble, and bother their older dog.

Red Bell with Vase

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Still Life Pepper Art Vegetable Garden

Oil on canvas hardboard, 9" x 12"

I had a wonderful Easter and was happy to complete this still life during all of the heavy rain/hail storms we've been having for several days and more to come!  Everything is super-green outside and it is a treat for the eyes.  Well it's a treat when it stops raining for a little while.  I painted the red pepper with a blue crackle vase and a white pitcher.  I love the red popping out within the pepper.

Blue Face Angelfish

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Exotic Marine Life Tropical Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

My painting group was given a photo of this tropical fish as a challenge painting for all of us to paint in our own styles.  An artist and photographer friend had taken the photo at an aquarium in San Diego where she lived for several years and still visits.  I had fun with it and didn't worry about too much detail.  I was pleased with the suggestion of the pink coral in the background and just the overall "underwater" look of the painting.  Hope it comes across like this to viewer.

Cyclamen Flowers

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas with sides painted. 6" x 6" x 3/4".

I received Cyclamens for Valentines's Days a few years ago and I painted them in their formal "marching pose" which is what it looked like to me from a profile view.  I really liked their intense colors too which I complimented with the yellows and greens.

Palette Knife Tulips

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

Oil on canvas board, 7" x 5"

In the mood for some palette knife painting, I chose my bright red/orange tulips for subjects.  They were standing up straight in a stiff wind with their wavy leaves leaning in all directions.  I like the way the sun highlights the blooms and makes them glow while leaving the background foliage darkly shaded.

Sepia Portrait with Shades

Debra Sisson Oil Painting People Portrait Male

Oil on canvas hardboard, 10" x 8"

This is another painting from color study classes.  I painted my husband, Rick, in one of his ball caps. We used Old Masters primaries of yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and black (I used Paynes's grey) with white.  I think I like working with limiting (or not!) primary colors.

After the Show

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Horse Art Farm Animal Portrait Equine

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

I painted this close-up of a beautiful horse as he was relaxing after at a show.  Horses have the most wonderful expressions when they're resting.  This horse, Hank, is a Quarter Horse who competes in hunter/jumper events.

A Yorkies's Gaze

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Portrait Yorkshire Terrier

Oil on canvas panel, 10" x 8".

Some Yorkies wear their hair up and here is a painting of one with that bright terrier look that make them so endearing.  I love the light fawn coloring of their faces against the silver/blue grey of their coats.  This one has his ears trimmed.  Hmmm, maybe this was actually a Silky Terrier.  It's been a while since I painted him.
I could paint a similar painting for you - just let me know!

Purple Magnolia

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Jane Saucer

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8"

A little clipping taken from my Jane Magnolia tree served as my model for this still life. I love these blooms, but the tree is a little way from my house and I kept forgetting to wander out there and keep an eye on it.  I thought I might be too late to get a bloom to paint but I got a beauty!  These spring Magnolia blossoms don't get as much attention as the white southern Magnolia blossoms which bloom in the summer.

American Mother 2 8x10 oil by Leslie Newman

American Mother oil 8x10
This is a revision of my original American Mother. I realized I wanted to soften lines, blur the background  and lighten her body feathers.
So, I did those things and I like how it turned out so much better. I also roughed up the look of her
head feathers, and changed the position of her eye.
These simple changes really helped this painting, I am so glad I made them
I hope you enjoy the changes of this American Mother!

Basset Hound in Red Wagon

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Animals

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 8"

My country neighborhood was visited recently by a friendly young Basset Hound on the loose and I took several photos of her.  She followed us on walks and played with the neighbors' dogs.  She had owners who loved her and were looking for her and put an ad in our local paper.  She was returned home but I still had many great photos, so this is the first painting I did of her.  I put her in a child's red wagon.  She definitely was a sweetheart!  Her name is Mollly.
