Tulips Waving

Watercolor on Canvas Painting Still Life Flower Art red yellow botanical

Watercolor on stretched canvas, 12" x 12" x 3/4".

I experimented with a different approach to a watercolor in this floral painting.  The canvas I used has a special sizing that accept watercolors and the finished painting is sealed with a clear acrylic protectant which is archival.  The surface of the canvas accepts the paint differently than paper.  I think I like the way it stays more on the surface of the painting and it's also much easier to "lift" the paint back to a lighter shade or even back to white.  I really appreciate the fluidity of watercolors, and in this painting, I had a great time shaping the tulips and leaves with a feeling of energy and movement.

The 3/4" sides are painted making framing optional.

Old Zion Road

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Landscape Rural Arkansas Country Farm Land Barn Red Shed

Oil on hardboard, 8" x 10"

I'd been thinking of painting this large red shed that is situated very close to a bend in the road that it's on.  I really liked it in this light with the sun shining through the clouds after a rainfall.  The colors of the barn and field were brightly lit and glowing against the sky and the road in the foreground.  I was trying for a looser feel with it and I was pleased with the result!

Single Gerbera

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Daisy Flower Still Life Art

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8"

This was a painting from a while ago.  I'm presently working on several paintings and one is of spring Daffodils.  In this painting I wanted to work with intense color and value contrasts, and painting a graceful  Gerbera Daisy bloom was a natural choice for this purpose.  The painting is very simple yet contains all of the information that interested me.  I'm again reminding myself to strive for simplicity of shapes and the unity of the painting.

Rocky Coastline of San Fransisco by Leslie Newman oil 8x10

Rocky Coastline of San Fransisco
8x10 oil on panel

This painting was done from a photo reference from a family friend who I also
went to High School with. Kevin Barnard is my friend who captured this
image and  had posted it his Face Book.

I really liked his photo and asked him if I could use it as a photo
reference for a painting. He was glad to let me use it. I really enjoyed painting this, but,
I would like to re-paint this on a really large canvas and move a few of the large boulders around and play with perspective. I will post that when I  finish it. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy

Resting in South Pasture

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Farm Animal Portrait Horse Art Equine Landscape

Watercolor on Bristol board, 7" x 8".

Being tired of the snow and winter scenery lately, I daydreamed about a warm, summer landscape.  A horse enjoying the landscape is even better I thought, so I put them together.  I have been listening to other watercolor artists discuss painting on different surfaces and I decided to try painting on gessoed Bristol board.  It leaves the paint more "on top" of the surface and is easier to remove and change things this way.  It gives it a more distinctive look also, I think, because puddles of paint are layered on top of or next to other puddles.  It is closer to painting on hot-pressed watercolor paper in the way the paint reacts to the surface. I feel like trying different ways to paint frequently and sometimes I give in to the feeling!

Tabby Kitten

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Pet Portrait Cat Feline Art

Oil on hardboard, 7" x 5".

Cat (kitty) faces are truly as fascinating to paint as they are to observe in real life.  I love combining all the varied colors for the fur of a Tabby to make a painting.  But sometimes it is frustrating to paint their markings which seem to get "complicated" in my head and I tend to get lost.  This time, however, the painting seemed to flow much more easily.  Great fun!

Doe Portrait II

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Wildlife Art Animal Portrait Commission

Oil on hardboard, 7" x 7"

I enjoyed painting this image of a doe again for a collector and I believe it has more color and vibrancy this time, so that is always a pleasant result for me.  It's much easier to see the deer now as they run and jump through trough the leafless woods on either side of the country roads here in Arkansas.  Winter has its advantages for viewing wildlife!

Peace Roses by Leslie Newman

peace roses  6x6 oil on canvas

This is a simple quick study I did of a few peace roses. It was a gift along with a
small easel for one of my female physicians.  She has a terrific practice with two parts to it.
One side is very clinical. The other, is a beautiful feminine side for all sorts of
cosmetic procedures and products. The walls and furnishing are high end,
and done is various light blues, creams, and neutrals.
She was just delighted with it.

I get great joy out of giving of my artwork, either donating for charity or giving to family
and friends. I can tell it is appreciated by the look
on their faces when it is received, and by the big hugs!

Cold Water Ducks

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Animal Art Wildlife Fowl Lake

Oil on hardboard, 10" x 12".

I had previously painted this winter scene of ducks in a cold pond with a stiff breeze from my photos of these cute ducks.  I added another duck and painted it larger this time around and had fun with it again.

Young Fisherman

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Portrait Boy Cane Pole Fishing

Oil on hardboard, 8" x 6".

I was interested in the light and shade pattern on the boy and ground as he stood in the dappled light with his fishing pole in the water.  It was a wonderful summer scene and I wanted to capture its simplicity and peacefulness.  His cuffed overalls were also great to paint!  I had kept the painting looser for a while and then I got into the details too much I think.  Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.  Summer seems far away now, especially with snow falling today.

Wooly Cow

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Farm Animal Portrait Brown Cow Art

Oil on RayMar Linen panel. 6" x 8".

This cow was striking with her great markings and long, fuzzy winter hair.  It is an older painting of mine and her face and presence started me looking for other wonderful images of cows to paint.  I have happily found many since then and am always looking for more.

Arkansas Elk 11x14 oil on panel by Leslie Newman

ARKANSAS ELK

This strong animal is standing chewing long grasses, while looking at the photographer,
Bob Shull, who is a noted Arkansas photographer.
Bob has kindly given me the o.k. to paint any of his
work.

I painted this Elk for a friend in Iowa, in memory of the
Elk he bagged out in Montana several yrs ago.
I gave it to he and his family at during Christmas two weeks ago.
I hope you enjoy my painting of this wonderful
animal.

In addition, I would like to wish everyone who views this site
a healthy and prosperous New Year for 2011.
I hope to add lots of paintings to this blog for you to see. LN

Friendly Holstein

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Farm Animal Portrait Dairy Cow Art

Oil on hardboard, 5" x 7".

I was interested in the patterns of these black and white Holstein cows as they stood together.  The shadows made by the bright morning sun on their faces and ears were also fun to work with.  They were interested in the photographer too as they posed for their photos!  My daughter, Kelley, knows that I love great animal photos and she made the effort to stop and take photos of the cows which are on her way to work in Kansas.
