I reworked an older painting that I did. I had painted this multi-colored fluffy cat on a windowsill with his shadow falling on a red tablecloth. I livened up some of the color in the background and softened the contrast of the shadow on the red cloth. This guy has the comfortable attitude of a cat enjoying his home.

This is a quick little study I did yesterday. It is a tree line I saw recently. The trees I saw were

all brown and dormant for the winter, I

played with blues, lavenders, greens and yellows.

The trees I set up on a ridge and had the light hit one side intensely with just a hint of new leaves.

Part reality, part imaginary, I hope you enjoy my Springtime trees!

If you have spent any time in large cities, you may have likely seen scenes similar to this in the city parks.

Different groups of older men (usually) hanging out, playing cards, or chess. This painting reflects that scene.

Last fall while in Washington D.C visiting my daughter and her family, I went to my favorite Art shop several times. It is called Utrecht Art Supply Store in Downtown D.C. While there, I saw an artist postcard up on their bulletin board. It was by an artist named Shelley, and it had a similar picture of a painting on it of the older men in the park playing card games on it. This was a painting so similar to what I wanted to do. So, when I got home from my trip, I got to work and did my own version of this idea. I changed some of the things in the painting to make it my own. Notice the younger man at the end of the table showing them a thing or two, while it appears the man at the end of the table is snoozing.

I sometimes forget how much I enjoy painting bunnies. Their rabbit eyes are very distinctive and appealing. This guy's nose was a winner I thought. I built (painted) his fluffy coat and soft ears with several transparent layers of watercolor which gave him the softeness that I wanted. His coloring was also something I enjoyed working with.

"River Sunrise" 12x24 oil on canvas

This Painting is from an image I have permanently burned in my head. It is of a early morning

sunrise on the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa..

We lived just up the hill from the Mighty Miss my entire childhood.

We would water ski as kids

through the little opening in the middle of the tree line, which was dumb. The opening was actually part of

a wing dam, which are solid rock with cement and trees. This particular area behind

the tree line was actually an old lock and dam.

I donated this painting for a huge silent auction/Gala in NW Arkansas every August that

supports the Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

I was pleased this sold at the silent auction with 100% of the price going to the Children's Hospital. The Gala is called the Color of Hope. It was fortunate that about 10 of my artist friends I asked all donated their work as well. All different price

points,mediums, sizes and themes, the art was a big success. There were 350 items in all that were auctioned off for

$920K going to the kids. Next yr, hopefully we can top that

Irish Landscape 6" x 12" oil on canvas

Irish Landscape

This landscape painting is from a picture my cousin Tim took while recently in Ireland.

He shared it on facebook. I embelished it with some color along the front fence line, adding

some pinks and yellow oranges in for some brightness.

The rest is identical to the scene.

This painting I gave away at our annual Christmas dinner outing for Plein Aire

Painters of the Ozarks, PAPO on Dec.6.at Mermaids in Fayetteville.

All the artists in attendance, brought a finished pc of art, we drew names and

gave our art to the person we drew. It is always the highlight of the event!

Willis Miller, a wonderful artist in the group received this painting.

I was fortunate to receive a lovely landscape painting

from Charles Harrington.

I had several Giclee's of this painting made to give as Christmas Gifts this yr.

They will be late on arrival as I need to go pick them up at the gallery who

printed my Glicee, and it is 4 days after Christmas...oooops!

5x5 regional show. Everyone submits one or two paintings and they go for a silent auction

The fresh and transparent appearance of watercolors are great when painting flowers and I wanted these daffodills to burst out with color and movement. I also used pen and ink lines to define the flowers, stems and leaves. Leaving parts of the petals and much of the background white lends a crispness to the painting I think.

This dog has sunk into her comfy fleece bed and looks like she's ready for a story. I really enjoy working with watercolors to create a sense of mystery with light and shadow. The biggest challenge with watercolors, that many artists know, is the frustration of ruining the beautiful white paper and not being able to fix the problem (save the painting!) as you can with an oil painting.

This Border Collie was one of several talented dogs catching frisbees at a balloon festival in Oklahoma. All of the dogs were really interesting to watch, but a particular dog was more intense and hyper than the rest I thought. I took several photos of him and I loved the stance I caught him in. Unfortunately he wasn't very successful at getting a frisbee before one of the other dogs did. He never stopped trying though!

It's hard to contain the personalities and intelligence of these two little sweeties I'm sure, but I did combine their faces on one canvas. Yorkies are a flurry of blue-grey, tan, red-tan, black, and then grey again. Their coats are their shining glory! But their eyes are what steal hearts I think.

Fall Color

This painting is so vibrant, I love the dramatic colors. Mother Nature provides us with such a treat! We have a red maple in the back corner of our yard, that is

identical to this red maple. Just when we get tired of all the hot weather, and

the green trees for several months, the weather cools, and

the leaves start to turn.

Within just a few days, the color develops into the most

beautiful crimson red.

This small painting forever memorializes

our fall season. Soon the leaves will fall, the trees will be bare and getting

ready to bloom forth with with new

green life.

I guess now I need to do three more paintings signifying the seasonal changes!

I'm still on the color orange this month and I painted these poppies boldly. Their faces are turned up to the sun and receiving the most sun possible for them. They love it! I still want to paint with oranges and reds, but not sure if I will paint a Jack-o-lantern which I've thought about. I painted the shaded areas first and then the sunlit ones. It was easier to judge the values with this piece. The Jack-o-lantern would be fun though!

Petunias were still in full bloom last week and I caught some cascading from their container. I was instantly attracted to their shadows on the concrete walk and also on the brick wall of the library. Sunlight highlighted some the petunia petals while the others remained shaded. These all formed an interesting design to paint. The container became a more "pumpkiny" color when I painted it because it just felt right. I loved popping in all of the shades of reds and pinks in this piece!

Light and shadow were even more important to me in this larger painting. I laid in the shaded areas first to get the darks established and then allowed myself to work on the unshaded areas. This helped the midtones be closer to the correct value and gave them some glow. The grove was a pleasing combination of some favorite things - rock, water and greenery. It seemed to be an intimate look into a secluded area of nature!

Michigan Shores 18x24 oil

(for some reason the color in this photo isn't as vibrant as the original)

This painting I did last fall for my brother and Sister-in-law for their Chritmas present.

They live in Western Michigan near Lake Michigan. They boat on the lake in a large

42 ft cruiser. Cruising by the Michigan shores looks like this.

Lots of rocks, trees, and color, expecially in the fall.

I hope you enjoy my redition of a rocky Michigan shoreline!

Burros were enjoying the same bluebonnet fields that the Texas longhorns were. I loved the relaxed stance of this donkey and how the sunlight lit her shaggy coat. The bright green fields with the floating flowers seemed to roll along for miles. Very peaceful.

Working with a palette knife in this painting, I painted quickly to capture the exuberant feeling I felt for the scene. I worked from a friend's photograph that was taken when we hiked a beautiful forest area of Arkansas. The filtered sunlight highlighted the colorful maple leaves that were outstreched against the rough bark of a pine tree.I really liked working with the thick paint and letting areas settle into others and leaving things alone when I felt it was time to quit.

(first of all, excuse the glare in this photo!)

This small painting I recently completed to enter into the Art Center of the Ozarks popular 5x5 Jazz Soiree held on November 4th from 5:55 til 7:55.

The Art Center, located in Springdale, AR, gives out the canvas's, one or two of them to each artist. The artist completes them and and returns them prior to the event.

They hang, and tag each painting, and there are more and more each yr. This is the

most popular event of the yr, and makes a lot of

money for the center.

There are paintings from youngsters just learning to paint, high schoolers, college age and

professional artists. watercolor, mixed media, acrylic, oil, wood etc. As long as it is 5x5, it is

in the event.

All art starts at a minimum $25.00 bid, with the bids closed at 7:55. I have a

nice collection of these 5x5's and look forward to this event each yr.

If you are in the area of Springdale AR, on November 4th come to the Art Center

downtown and check it out. Lots of fun, and you might just bid on a

masterpiece to take home.

A path leading into a shaded forest seemed to follow the "entrances" theme that I had worked on recently. This painting is different in that it is in a nature setting and not buildings. It was hard to get the colors correct in the photo but this is really close I think. There are lots of bright yellows for the sunlit areas and some reds and violets appear in the shaded parts. I love to hike and a path like this is so inviting! (I will post my first painting in the theme of entrances in a few weeks).

I painted this from an older photo of my pug, Mabel, when she was much younger and her tongue protruded only a little bit (it's much longer now). She had this wonderfully quizzical, wall-eyed expression when you got her attention and this look is typical of a young Pug and I've always wanted to capture it in paint. The sides of the painting are painted making it ready to hang unframed if desired.

What could be more pleasant than a Longhorn calf in Texas Bluebonnets? A friend took some great photos of cattle and donkeys in a bluebonnet covered pasture south of Dallas. This calf was being protected by the bull. I was attracted to the image of the calf and his spots blending in with the flowers. Bluebonnets have a wonderfully sweet smell.

My favorite rose bush 6"x6" oil on canvas

My Favorite Rose Bush

This Rose bush is something else. I painted this in under 1 hour

for the www.Dailypaintworks.com weekly challenge this week.

The challenge was to use three colors only, Ultramarine Blue, Cad Red light, and Cad Yellow. white very sparingly. Go outside, find something growing from the ground and paint it.

So, I of course, headed to my favorite Rose Bush. This bush was given

to my by great friend Cindy, several yrs ago on my birthday.

I had planted it in our back yard against the fence on the North side. It did

nothing. A yr later, I moved it to my shade Garden on the North

side of the house against a fence that gets filtered light, with a little direct morning

sun. Since moving it, the bush is thriving. It has more than

tripled in size and is producing massive amt of blooms.

The other day, it had 45 buds and blooms on it.

I'm exploring new approaches to flower painting with an impressionist feel and I like the way in which these roses and vase came together as a painting. I kept the brushstrokes simple and the colors seem to vibrate with the gold tones throughout the pinks and purples. I also used thicker paint in describing the shapes of the leaves and blooms.

I really wanted the title of the painting to include "green bottle" but that would be too long I thought. The things I enjoyed were the strong light falling across the onions and garlic and also the many reflections and shapes in the green glass bottle. This was definitely a fun piece, but it was one of those paintings that I feel I had included too many details and wasn't what I had envisioned when I started.

This is a dramatic scene off of a road nearby we will call

Pleasant Grove.

Early one morning earlier this summer, I was driving home from

dropping my Husband off at work. It was early and

the sun was just coming up into and over a few of the trees as I headed East.

I left out a few homes and sidewalks and made the scene my own for this painting.

The beautiful brand new greens were still very young and bright.........I hope you enjoy my Pleasant Grove painting.

Watercolor on watercolor canvasboard, 8.75" x 11".

I kept watch over my begonia bulb after planting it in a pot and made sure it received plenty of shade so that I could finally enjoy its beautiful leaves and blooms. My attention to it paid off with these delicately-colored flowers. I decided to paint them in watercolor on the watercolor canvas I've been experimenting with for some time. The watercolor paint can be applied in puddle-like forms to make the shapes of the composition which I find interesting. And many layers can be built up if I'm careful not to disturb the layers underneath with a heavy hand. I sprayed the painting with clear acrylic so that it doesn't need to be framed under glass like watercolors on paper must be framed.

An artist friend photographed a wonderful image of a bee busy at work on a cluster of pink azalea petals. It became one of many challenge images to paint in our artist group. The mediums used were oil, watercolor and colored pencil. This oil painting was my contribution. I love the translucent wings of the bee covering the azalea bloom. I still haven't painted the bowl of lemons that the others have finished.

Australian Shepherds are definitely easy on the eye and fun to paint for me as a dog admirer. Their eyes are startling, yes, but what I really like are their folded ears which perk up when they are interested in something or someone. I had a great time with the grays, whites, black, browns, and the overlapping of all of them in this piece.

I used only a few ingredients in making this painting - bright sunlight, a white bowl and a few cherries. The shapes of the cherries' shadows became another visual ingredient to be enjoyed too. The dark red cherries glow a brighter red in the light and colors bounce around in the mix with the bowl. I like to bake tasty things, but painting the ingredients is more fun and rewarding. And the result lasts longer.

Here she is behind a neighbor's fence waiting for her family to fetch her. She gave me her friendly expression, or maybe it was a pleading one to be let out. This is Kiwi, she lives in Eastern Florida and loves her families pool. She has a sister Mango, and the
two of them love to take a dip and play. Kiwi's owner, who was a childhood neighbor of mine yrs ago, took of picture of her in mid-flight. We are facebook buddies and when he posted this picture, I knew I had to paint it.

I used several glazes on the water, followed by my pallette knife. I used think strokes of paint
on the dogs heavy coat. This painting was a lot of fun to do, and will soon be hanging in it's new
home in Southern Florida.

The flesh of an avocado is one of my favorite things to eat and it also makes for a rich subject to paint. I delight in the color and the thick, creamy form that it makes inside of the skin. Of course, the large pit remains a center of interest along with the flesh when I paint this fruit that tastes like a vegetable. Yum!

This was my first home-grown Gladiolus and also my first painting of one. I decided to paint the bloooms close-up and as more of a series of shapes in sunlight and shade rather than complete flowers. This is what seemed to appeal to me as I observed them. I may decide to paint them in more of a traditional manner also! I didn't know that Glads are in the Iris family and are sometimes called Sword Lillies.

This painting is of a gorgeous sunrise on Pleasant Grove Road in Rogers, AR.

I had dropped my husband off at work early one late Spring morning and

took a picture of a gorgeous sunrise. I came home

and recreated the idea of this sunrise in oils. I left off any homes along the way and just

focused on the idea of scene.

I wanted to capture this little guy's expression and his flowing locks of hair. And I really had fun with his flipped-up tongue and tiny teeth. Many of these terriers have an underbite but I don't think this one has. Yorkies are bright-eyed and eager to please (if you don't spoil them too much!) I know from exprience.

Purple Passion

This painting I am very happy with. I entered it into the annual ANA (Artists of

Northwests Arkansas) juried

show later this summer. This show is hung at the ACO Art Center

of the Ozarks in Springdale, AR. I do not know if

it will be juried in yet, but I can hope.

I used a combination of deep dark purple iris along

with a combination of other flowers and did my own thing.

It has a light background mixed with the suggestion of other flowers in the background.

This sweet little pink and green painting was done last yr. I took this picture one night at a evening

Bible Study I was attending.

Cazia listened to the video/study we were doing as long as she could,

until she snuggled into

this big comfy green chair and closed her eyes.

It was so sweet. I hopped up with my cell phone camera and

snapped away. She had no idea. Her Mom asked if I could

paint this in these colors. She was wearing the pink with a green

sparkly butterfly headband.

I painted the background the quinacridone violet to match and compliment her

outfit and the spring green.

They came and picked this up and it was a total surprise for Cazia. She said "No one had

ever painted me!" She was just delighted and so was her Mom.

These hybrid bearded Irises were given to me as rhizomes a few years ago and they were such beautiful surprises when they bloomed! Rich, multi-toned petals seemed to be lit from within by the sun and their bright yellow centers. I felt like pushing and reinforcing the stain-glassed appearance of these flowers. I enjoyed playing with the color and it left me wanting to do more.

Sweet ZebraDebra Sisson Oil Painting Animal Art Wildlife Africa

The most friendly and photogenic zebra I've met so far was this lovely one who posed for pictures again and again at the Safari Zoo in Gentry, Arkansas which I visited this spring. I was really impressed with her when she bowed her neck and gave me her lovely eye. She and her many friends seemed very happy roaming about in their woody pastures. The sun highlighted her forehead and ear and this made me decide to paint her. It was as much fun as painting a horse for me.

I am Back!! Computer troubles over, thank goodness. That makes about 3 major problems

for a 17 month old Sony top of the line laptop. Not real pleased with this machine, but for today it is functioning again. I need to give a shout out to the Geek Squad of the Rogers, AR Best Buy!!

This painting I did as a gift for a Physician I see. She is a art lover, and it really

shows in her office. They have original art everywhere. I really

appreciate that in offices, instead of a lot of framed posters.

I set up a small still life with some lovely light pink neighborhood peonies, and some

of my own blooming oak leaf hydrangeas.

It is in a deep golden rectangular clear glass container. The colors all work together nicely

for a soft but rich painting. I really like the thick strokes of color.

I used my Utrecht naples yellow mixed with Gamblin's radient pink for the

yummy colors in the peonies.

I hope you enjoy this piece, it is nice to be back!!

This sleepy Boston Terrier looks so comfortable in a curled-up position in his favorite place. I love his expression with an eye looking toward the person (photographer!) who is interrupting his slumber. His handsome, shiny coat was fun to paint with the many highlights on his dark hair. He even has a "kiss" marking on the top of his head which is a round spot of white surrounded by black. I know he's not always this calm. This dog has energy to burn and will play for hours. Thanks to all of my generous dog-loving friends who send me inspirational photos like this one!
