I wanted to make this little painting sing with color and light.  The red Gerberas may have started out to be the "stars", but the bowl actually seemed more interesting when I applied thick bands of color with a palette knife to its rim.  Gerberas are some of my favorite flowers to paint.  I wish I could keep them growing inside during the cold seasons.

This was a very attractive scene to me and I was excited to catch some of the feeling of it in paint.  The water was rushing through a heavily wooded area and the sun was lighting up the background through the trees.  I enjoyed painting the big rocks too but they were a challenge.

Maple and Pine Debra Sisson Oil Painting Landscape Palette knife Art Autumn Trees Forest

Working with a palette knife in this painting, I painted quickly to capture the exuberant feeling I felt for the scene.  I worked from a friend's photograph that was taken when we hiked a beautiful forest area of Arkansas. The filtered sunlight highlighted the colorful maple leaves that were outstreched against the rough bark of a pine tree.I really liked working with the thick paint and letting areas settle into others and leaving things alone when I felt it was time to quit.

Tuscan Sunrise 5x5

(first of all, excuse the glare in this photo!)

This small painting I recently completed to enter into the Art Center of the Ozarks popular 5x5 Jazz Soiree held on November 4th from 5:55 til 7:55.

The Art Center, located in Springdale, AR, gives out the canvas's, one or two of them to each artist. The artist completes them and and returns them prior to the event.

They hang, and tag each painting, and there are more and more each yr. This is the

most popular event of the yr, and makes a lot of 

money for the center.

There are paintings from youngsters just learning to paint, high schoolers, college age and

professional artists. watercolor, mixed media, acrylic, oil, wood etc. As long as it is 5x5, it is

in the event.

All art starts at a minimum $25.00 bid, with the bids closed at 7:55. I have a

nice collection of these 5x5's and look forward to this event each yr.

If you are in the area of Springdale AR, on November 4th come to the Art Center

downtown and check it out. Lots of fun, and you might just bid on a

masterpiece to take home.

Sage is a good name for this Yellow Lab who is getting on in years and still bears a sweet and earnest expression.  What a smart and loyal dog for a loving family!  It was a rewarding commissioned piece for me to paint.

Whiskers Debra Sisson Oil Painting Cat Art Pet Portraits

My daughter has a fluffy black cat with white markings and the longest and thickest whiskers I've ever seen.  I painted him in one of his "regal" poses which prominently displays his whiskers close-up.  It's a little early for a Halloween painting I realized.  Oh well, I had fun with it.

Private Path Debra Sisson Oil Landscape Painting Forest Woodland Nature Hiking

A path leading into a shaded forest seemed to follow the "entrances" theme that I had worked on recently.  This painting is different in that it is in a nature setting and not buildings.  It was hard to get the colors correct in the photo but this is really close I think.  There are lots of bright yellows for the sunlit areas and some reds and violets appear in the shaded parts.  I love to hike and a path like this is so inviting!  (I will post my first painting in the theme of entrances in a few weeks).

Nose to MuzzleDebra Sisson Oil Painting Donkey Art Farm Animal Portraits Jackass

If you observe a group of donkeys you can usually see something similar to the scene I painted with this pair.  They are very "nosey" and also affectionate.  I enjoy painting the coloring of their coats and their distinct muzzles.  Of course, their long, hairy ears are always fun.

This handsome Pug dog is quite comfy on his bedding in my painting.  I painted it for my local Pug rescue group's annual fundraising event this month.  "Pugfest" is organized by NWArkansas Pug Rescue and is always loads of fun!
