Landscape Color Study

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Abstract Lake Landscape

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 8"

In the painting class I attend we have been making color charts and doing paintings from using the colors that are leftover from all of the mixes.  This painting resulted after a color chart of three primaries and white.  I am always amazed at the amount of variation that is available from using such a limited palette.  I liked the soft and vibrant colors of this landscape painting.  It was so interesting to see what the other students painted with their chosen primaries.  Really interesting and fun!

Winter Fox

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Wildlife Art Animals

Oil on canvas hardboard, 10" x 8"

I have several ideas for fox paintings and this is my second one this year.  This one includes most of the body including the bushy tail in the snow.  His expression has a peaceful feeling which I like against the natural beauty of the wintery landscape.  Maybe this will be my last painting of winter for a while.  I have tulips and other spring flowers to paint.

Resting Birds 16X20 OIL by Leslie Newman

This is a painting I worked on a summer or two ago, I have it framed and hanging in our great room. One smaller simple bird and one with beautiful large feathers.  The larger bird is regal and owning his surroundings. I hope you enjoy these two feathered friends.

(I will be away and not posting for about the next 10 days or so. I will resume posting when I get home. I have a few new oil paintings very close to being finished I will be posting during April and May.) In the meantime, please enjoy Debra's and Ann's beautiful paintings!

Posing Manx

Oil Painting Pet Cat Art Feline Portrait

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

I captured the cat grooming herself in a lawn chair on her front porch and I was just another visitor.  She seemed to enjoy the attention as I photographed her.  I decided I liked the twising pose of this yellow and white Manx and painted her this way.  This tailless cat is true to her breed being a robust hunter with a mellow disposition. I liked the image she made as she stared straight at me against the blue and white striped background.

Koi in Pool

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Fish Animal Semi-Abstract Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 9" x 11"

Koi fish are converging into a single group in this painting.  I wanted to convey the energy of their forms as they slid through the water and created waves and ripples.  I used a palette knife in much of the painting and strived to keep a loose and abstract feel to the piece.  The colors are joyful and bring a smile!

Ms Willie's Dolls

I was very fortunate to meet Ms Willie who had the most extensive doll collection I have ever seen. There was not a room in her house that did not have at least 50 dolls. She also had a carriage house in back of her house that was the home of numerous dolls. She and her husband passed away several years ago and I have since wondered what happened to all those beautiful dolls.

Young Appaloosa

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Horse Art Farm Animal Portrait

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

I went back to painting a horse again in this one - an Appaloosa colt backlit by an evening sunset (or sunrise!).  The low-key values on most of the body of the colt contrasts with the brightly lit areas of the edge of his chest and upper back legs.  I wanted to portray a serene mood in this piece and I also admired his spotted coat.  A little bit of information about this breed of horse:  the Appaloosa is known for its colorful leopard-spotted coat pattern.  It is best known as a stock horse used in a number of western riding disciplines.              Horses are always a joy to paint!

Reflections 6x6 oil on canvas

Reflections  6x6 oil on canvas

Reflections is a quick little study I have been working on, It is a small warm white rice bowl on veryy colorful fabric. I worked on this under direct light and the fabric was
reflecting onto the warm white bowl.
This little painting is part of a dailypaintworks challenge. You
were asked to use no grey, just white added to the colors.
I want to do a second one to have it be a bit more defined. For now we have
reflection on the white bowl.
Watch for a different version to come in the near future.

Chicks in Twig Basket

Debra Sisson Easter Oil Painting Chickens Art Farm Animals

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

Baby chicks seem to glow in the sun if the lighting is just right and in this scene I wanted these three to come to life in the twiggy basket. I think children who grow up in the country are so lucky! Actually you don't have to be a kid to love this kind of spring fun.  I didn't grow up with these critters but I can paint them and enjoy them!

Snowy Ridge

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Winter Landscape Rural Arkansas Lincoln Lake Park

Oil on stretched canvas, 16" x 12"

While trailing along with our local hiking club I saw some great scenery at Lincoln Lake Park  in Northwest Arkansas.  Our snowfall in Ft. Smith (farther south) had already melted so it was great fun to hike in the warmer temps and still see snow covering much of the landscape.  The movement of lights and darks in the snow and green moss covering the the rocky slopes was interesting and I thought that this painting told the best story of the sights.  There was no path to follow to the top in case you were interested.

Calf in Hay

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Cow Art Animal Portrait Farm Bovine

Oil on stretched linen canvas with 3/4" staple-free edges - 8"x10"x3/4".

This is one of my favorite cow paintings from a few years ago with a calf looking out through a hole in a hay stack.  I like the image of his dark face highlighted by the sun and the shapes of the hay surrounding it also.

Spring Hares

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Rabbit Art Pet Animal Portrait Spring Wildlife

Oil on hardboard, 7" x 9"

I painted these spotted rabbits bunched together with some spring colors and blooming flowers happening in the background.  Sometimes the looser approach is best when I  have an idea about a piece, and I went with that thought with this painting.  The expressions of the rabbits are what drew me in to begin with and that's what I wanted to portray.

Goddess Diane 11x14 oil on canvas by Leslie Newman

Diane  11x14 oil on canvas by Leslie Newman
This is a painting of a famous Goddess, Diane. I did this as a challange two yrs ago, and I am very pleased with how this turned out. I used a limited palette as you can see. I used Titanium white, Dioxazine violet, and cadmium yellow deep. This was fun to do. I sketched her outline and then created several different mixes of the white and purple. From the lightest light, thru to the darkest dark, her image emerged. The deep yellow is the perfect compliment for her statue's color . She has her beloved canine companion next to her.

Lovely Whippet

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Dog Art Pet Animal Portrait

Oil on canvas, 8" x 6" x 3/4"

Whippets are graceful looking dogs, of course, but I also really enjoy their patterns of coloring.  The subtle change of color dividing this one's face is so appealing.  The dog is mostly a wonderful creamy-white tone which contrasts with its large dark eyes and nose.  Whippets are also very expressive creatures with just a tilt of their heads or a downturn of their muzzles.

Mourning Dove Preening

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Bird Portrait Dove Wildlife

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 8".

This is a second painting of the same dove I painted before. The bird is in a different position on the deck rail and seems to be interrupted in her grooming process and pauses to look.  I used the same colors but different parts of the dove are highlighted and the sunlight catches the ruffled feathers.  Mourning doves are a joy to watch and I always try to avoid frightening them when they are feeding right outside my door.  I wish they wouldn't fly away so quickly at the slightest sound.

Wary Fox

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Red Fox Art Wildlife Animals Winter

Oil on hardboard, 8" x 6"

A fox in the snow is a great combination for me to paint I've found.  I love the intensity of a fox's gaze.  And his coloring against a cold and stark background adds to the pleasure of the scene I think.  I used lots of thick paint in areas and thoroughly enjoyed the process.  Painting is great fun when it is just that!
