Tabby Reach

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Cat Pet Art Maine coon

Oil on hardboard. 6" x 8".

I intended to play with the sunlight streaming across this tabby Maine Coon kitten lying on the floor with a basket.  I was pleased with the painting when the details of the tail in the background pushed it back in space and the front leg and paw came forward.  The kitten's eyes are interesting, but the movement from foreground to background is what makes it works as a painting to me.  Dramatic lighting is exciting!

Seven Swans a Swimming

 Seven Swans a Swimming
                                                                 oil on hardboard 3"x 5"
'

This painting I titled Seven Swans a Swimming, just like the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas." My brother has a beautiful yacht he keeps on White Lake, just a mile in water from Lake Michigan, on the western edge of Michigan. There are a lot of beautiful swans that live on White Lake. They swim and congregate along the edges of the lake near shore and all of the lilypads.Last year on vacation we spent time up at my brothers boat. Everyday, morning and evening, the swans had their routine of visiting behind the boats. We would throw crackers and bread crumbs to them. The male Dad swan was in the front, Mom was in the back and the five signets made up the middle. If you leaned over to close to the male, he would raise up in the water, spread his wings and sqawk loud enough to hear a mile away.

I took quite a few pictures of them. This first one is a smaller study, The same scene is being done again on a 6"x12" which I will share soon.

Bleeding Hearts

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 8"

Bleeding-Hearts are shade-lovers and I saw mounds of them among ferns when I visited Garvan Gardens near Hot Springs  recently.  They were waiting to be painted with the glow they had from a shot of sunlight coming through the dense leaves and other greenery.  It was like being in another little world in the gardens.  I was surprised when I saw how bright the sun was still shining after driving back into the "real world".  To see my art blog please visit http://www.debrasisson.blogspot.com/

I'm happy that a fellow Arkansas Daily Painter, Leslie Hanson Newman, has now added her art and presence to the blog!

Five Pears

For my first posting on Daily Painters of Arkansas, I am sharing some large yummy pears.

I ended up giving this as a birthday gift as a friend.
There is a little more glare on this painting than I had intended. Please
bear with me as I fine tune my posting.
This is done in oil on hard panel. 10" x 20"

Excited to join Daily Painters of Arkansas!

Well, here I am. Starting a new venture with Daily Painters of Arkansas. I was just delighted to get invited to share my artwork through the individual state's, Daily Painters!! I am so impressed with the work my fellow Arkansas state artist, Debra Sisson does. I will try to live up to her fine work.

I am working on a few small pieces and will try to get my first one posted yet this evening. Please be patient while I get up and running and familiar with everything. Also, please feel free to leave any comments or questions you might have. I have an adjoining blog at http://www.luvmyart.blogspot.com/ that you might like to visit to hear a little more about me.

I started painting around 8-10 yrs ago. Approx.13 yrs ago I found myself at home and unable to work due to a degenerative disease in my back. I had to find something I could do to occupy my time while at home recuperating from previous spinal surgeries and unfortunately several future ones I need.
The art has been a wonderful outlet of creativity for me that I am constantly developing.  When I feel up to it I can paint right in my home in a studio I have set up. I started out in Acrylics and have moved to oils.  I love the creamy nature they have, the deep rich colors and the way you can move them around on the canvas. When they dry, they just glow.

So, I will be back, hopefully within a few hours and get this party of paint started right here, stay tuned.

Hattie Loves Scarfs

Debra Sisson Commissioned Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Chihuahua

Oil on hardboard. 8" x 6".

Hattie was another fun commissioned painting and she was looking right at home among her many scarfs!  She obviously has great presence and dignity.  Who wouldn't want to spoil her?  I enjoyed painting her expressive face and soulful eyes.

Fall Apples

Debra Sisson Oil Still Life Painting Garden Fruit Organic Traditional Art

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

I didn't know the name of these little red and yellow-green apples I painted but I was attracted to their wonderful mingling of colors and their stems with drying leaves still attached. It was interesting to paint them in a subdued and traditional manner and their forms disappearing into the background.

Twin Irisis

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

10" x 8" Oil on panel.

This is a pink/purple Iris painting I did last year that I'm reposting.  I really like the flow of it in a painterly way and I just enjoy Irises - period.  I'll be gone from my studio for a few days with some artist pals.  We're going to explore a few art galleries in Hot Springs and stay at a beautiful, historical B & B.  This should be a fun adventure!  I have some commissions to return to when I come back that I'll be looking forward to painting.

Orange Poppies

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

Oil on hardboard, 8" x 6"

I've stayed with a very limited palette for this small painting of bright orange/red poppies lit by gloriously strong sunlight. Phthalo blue is a color I haven't used much before and it's the blue primary for my color mixing. It's a learning experience that I am open to and enjoying. I used some juicy, thicker paint for the blooming poppies. I'd love to hear from other artists about their favorite palettes or favorite colors!

This painting will be shipped with a small display easel.

Oilves in Jar

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Fruit Still Life Art Marinated Peppers Garlic

Oil on hardboard, 9" x 7"

This jar of marinated olives looked too good to eat. The extra-large green olives were floating in close quarters with garlic cloves and red pepper strips. I've been experimenting with a very limited pallette of three primary colors and so far it has been enjoyable. I'll see how things go as I use it with more subjects. Oh, yes, the olives did get eaten!

Doe Portrait

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Deer Art Wildlife Animals

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6"

One good thing about living where we do (Arkansas river valley) is that deer romp through our rural area right out in the open and don't seem to think much about it. Our neighbors would agree! The down side is, of course, that they eat tender garden offerings and rub the bark off of young trees. I don't get up early enough (why not?!) to see them in the semi-darkness, but I wanted to paint this doe against a dark background to show off her great features. So many different tones of red/brown/gray/white and more are apparent in her coloring. Painting wildlife is comforting to the soul and a lesson I've known for quite some time I believe.

Just Peeled

Debra Sisson Oil Painting Fruit Still Life Art Orange Citrus

Oil on hardboard, 5.25" x 6"

Near complimentary color notes of oranges and blue-violets make this painting of orange slices hum and vibrate.  This keeps me interested the entire painting.  I guess it's because my eyes and/or my brain stay alert and interested to see how the finished image will turn out!  I've painted this subject before but in watercolor.  The oil colors made the oranges seem transclucent also, so I like this approach just as well.  This painting will be shipped with a small display easel.  Please see the photo below!

A great way to display petite paintings such as my painting above is in a small display easel.  Below is a photo of my painting,  "Black-Capped Chick-a-Dee", in a small easel on a table in my entry room.  Each petite painting that you collect from me will now come with one of these easels so that you can display this way, or if you prefer, you can frame it and hang it on your wall.

Bright Eyes in Clover

Debra Sisson Commissioned Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Yorkie

Oil on hardboard. 6" x 6".

This was a great commissioned painting I did recently of a perky little Yorkie Terrier at home in her territory which  happens to have lots of green clover.  A small rest is all that's needed before she gets busy again I'll bet.  I love to paint these wee ones!  I love their coloring, expressions, and of course, their bright eyes are the frosting on the cake (or cupcake) to me.

Tiny Crimson Sweet

Oil Painting Lilly Still Life Art Watermelon Garden Fruit

Oil on hardboard. 5" x 7".

I always have some of these very small (runt!) watermelons in my garden spots growing among the few normal size melons each summer.  This one was especially precious and I painted it on a white tablecloth to celebrate its uniqueness.  I ended up celebrating roundness both in the watermelon and in the folds of the cloth and I thought that was pretty cool.  It was actually an excuse to paint the green and creamy-white stripes of the melon I'm sure.  Oh, by the way, it wasn't edible but I didn't care!
